Crops and Crop Rotation In 2004, wheat and barley were the major crops (80%), wheat being the preferred one. The wheat acreage had increased at all three locations south of Asella, where barley used to be the major crop. Only small areas (one or two timad) of field pea and broad bean were grown for home consumption. In 1980, cereals were cultivated on 60 per cent of the total area, an increase from 45 per cent in 1967. Up to 1980, the acreage of pulses had increased slightly, mainly at Kulumsa and Wajji, a trend that was discontinued in 2004.

This is assumed to correspond fairly well to field conditions at harvest time and be comparable to assessments made by the farmers in 2004. Up to 1980, the average DM yields of wheat increased by 25% and those of barley by 34%. In 1980, the highest average wheat yields were recorded at Aleltu Silosa and the lowest around Wajji. Average yields of barley were highest at Wajji. The average yield increase of field peas was marginal (7%). Based upon the estimates by the farmers in 2004, the yields of wheat had doubled since 1967 and those of barley had increased by 60 per cent.

Most of the newly met farmers started during the Military Government period but two farmers had adopted the use of herbicides after that period. Pests and Diseases In 1980, one third of the farmers declared they had no serious pest problem. Armyworms on barley could be difficult during certain years but the severity of attacks had declined since the late 1960s. Cutworms were considered an annual problem on barley by one fifth of the farmers but the majority believed that cutworms were more destructive in the 1960s.
